The recent turn of events in the never ending Terrell Owens saga has me a little worried. Watching Owens and his agent Drew Rosenhaus give an insincere apology today, I wondered about the motives of Rosenhaus. It was an obvious last ditch effort to get his client back in uniform this season. In doing so, he looked like a desperate, sleazy salesman. I mean, if you look up slimeball in the dictionary, you will find a picture of this guy. I would also imagine that anyone who shakes this guy's hand must feel like washing theirs immediately afterwards. This is why I'm concerned. This is the man who is representing the Bengals star receiver, Chad Johnson. Chad is not like T.O., but he does share some similarities. That combined with the impact of Rosenhaus could spell trouble for Cincinnati.
It is important to note that Owens has always been a trouble maker. He has caused problems in San Francisco, and when he arrived in Philadelphia it was a matter of time before he imploded. Johnson does not carry these characteristics. He is a team player, and he seems to put winning above personal accolades. But anyone who has seen his endzone celebrations knows that he loves the spotlight. Most NFL receivers seem to be ego-centric, and Johnson is definitely that. This leads me to my biggest concern. Johnson hired Rosenhaus as his agent this past year, and like many of Rosenhaus' clients, he must sign a new contract before Rosenhaus gets paid. They laid the foundation for this during a 700WLW Sportstalk segment last week. When asked about Johnson, Rosenhaus said that he would do his best to make sure Johnson gets everything he deserves. To me, this does not sound like good news. This could mean a hold out, and if nothing else, it will mean that they will want a new deal.
Hopefully Johnson has control of Rosenhaus because when Rosenhaus acts on his own, rediculous scenes like the one at Owens' house occur. If Rosenhaus has his way, he will take the Bengals organization hostage. He did it to the Eagles, and he has done it to the Packers. Ideally, the Bengals and Johnson will reach an agreement with limited help from the used car salesman, Rosenhaus. I just hope that we never have to watch the two of them at a sleazy press conference like the one I saw today.
